JOPPA ROAD

Situated in the conservation area of Portobello Edinburgh, this project was completed in conjunction with Konishi Gaffney Architects as a self-build project.

The property was derelict, a single linear brick outbuilding that was uninhabitable.

The design involved the demolition of an existing porch extension and the building of a new side extension to create a large open plan, living/kitchen/dining volume flooded with light.

Two bedrooms to the left wing with large glazing units and rooflights have created a dramatic, light filled house with views to the East facing garden and the sea beyond.

Existing as a single brick skin with no insulation, the construction was entirely upgraded to meet current thermal regulations.

Charred and sand blasted larch cladding unifies both old and new constructions.

An interesting use of concrete perforated block allows grass to grow through but creates hard surface for the patio area.
